Carel
The Pioneer Who Helped Shape South African Payments
Carel, a programmer with more than 40 years in the industry, has been at the heart of South Africa’s payments innovation since the late 1970s. He played a pivotal role in building the Bank Data Communications Network, and later, the country’s first ATM-sharing system, SASwitch, a milestone that transformed national banking accessibility.
His contributions didn’t stop there.
Carel single-handedly rewrote the entire EFT infrastructure for Pick n Pay, a system that ran successfully for two years. He later co-founded Centric Switch, now the largest national payments switch in South Africa.
What defines Carel is not only his technical brilliance but his deep commitment to honesty, integrity, and continuous innovation. He believes the future of payments lies in leveraging technology, especially AI, to challenge legacy limitations, empower smaller players, and enable the unbanked. His philosophy is simple: innovation must serve people.
Niels
The Architect Behind the Systems That Never Fail
Niels, an electronics engineer with a passion for software, excels not in flashy front-end systems but in the invisible architecture — the code, algorithms, and frameworks that form the backbone of high-performance payments environments.

He is a perfectionist who takes personal ownership of every line of code, driven by a desire to deliver solutions that aren’t just functional, but exceptional.

Niels began his career in the early days of digital banking adoption in South Africa. Working alongside Carel, he contributed to the development of point-of-sale systems that laid the groundwork for modern EFT processing. His strengths lie in crafting robust, dependable foundations that can scale across thousands of merchants and millions of transactions.
